WHEN CRIME MEETS CONFUSION…
It was a lot of money….
They had a plan, an ingenious one.
They fell short of a man. They chose one.
He had a strange name…Mumbai Xpress, but that was his working
name. His original name was Avinash. He no more wanted to flirt
with crime. He wanted to be law abiding. Unfortunately the only
law he could abide by, was Murphy’s Law. “If something
can go wrong…it will”
and with Avinash…Oh boy! Does it go wrong.
When most of the films are merchandizing only flesh, Mumbai Xpress
has dared to go for another big “F” word in the commercial
cinema circuit…”FAMILY”! Yes, Raajkamal Films
International & Sahara One Motion Pictures proudly present a
family entertainer.
Any member of your family be he/her on a perambulator or even
a wheel chair, will enjoy Mumbai Xpress.
Mumbai Xpress A non stop laughter train.
Simply put. Mumbai Xpress is a kidnap gone wrong. But, Kamal
Haasan has not put it simply. It is an intricately woven screenplay
about a kidnap, which touches many lives in Mumbai. A worthier
successor to Pushpak, Appu Raja & Chachi 420.A comedy, which
will be remembered.
The Indian love for spicy fare transcends cultural barriers.
Idli & sambhar is as popular in the North as Tandoori chicken
in the South. Mumbai Express is such a recipe that is bound to
captivate audiences as it crosses the Vindhyas & thunders
across the Indian sub continent..
For an audience that has seen many comedies. Mumbai Express is
a new & rare treat. The story revolves around a young boy
and the movie as such has been conceptualized keeping the young
viewer in mind. The appearance of sexy sirens Rakhi Sawant &
Mun Mun at the beginning of the movie does not detract from the
fact that this is but a wholesome family entertainer.
The ten year old Hardik, the 23 year old (and wobbly)horse, Charlie
and Munna the monkey, who makes a short and charming appearance-all
these are but surprise bonuses.
One would think that after having played so many different roles,
Kamal Haasan would come up empty handed when trying to create
a new character. One couldn’t be more wrong. Look at Avinash.
Is he stupid or is he nave? Is he brave or is he foolhardy? Is
he an ordinary man or a super hero? In fact he is all that &
more.
Manisha Koirala, Om Puri, Sharat Saxena, Dinesh Lamba, Vijay
Raaz compete for your attention as they portray their characters
brilliantly.
The film takes you by surprise throwing stomach churning incidents
at you in the cloak of hilarity.
Children sing Vande Mataram. Ordinary enough you say. But not
so when you add the fact that Kamal Hassan is in the background
hanging from steel cables at a height of almost 150 feet, trying
to clamber to safety.
For the first time in the history of Indian Cinema, the hero
walks to the tip of a boom of a tower crane perched on the 36th
floor of a high rise building. No dupes for Kamal Hassan here.
Just a lot of gasps of fear and awed horror from the audience.
Jumbo jets are part of the cast making you wonder how they orchestrated
their movement.
Aiming for this precise effect, Kamal had a slum set erected near
the airport.. With production design by Samir Chanda. Art director
Nitin Wable and his assistant Subrato make a grand & impressive
debut.
Dev Kohli had an uncanny knack of coming up with the precise
muhaavra when Kamal described the Tamil equivalent. A true synergy
of minds which threw up quaint songs
like “Bundar ki dug dugi hai” This song sung by Sonu
Nigam, KK, Shaan is a recurring theme through out the movie.
Speaking of synergy, the intro to the song where romance blossoms
between Kamal & Manisha was played by a Hungarian Orchestra.
Mr Ilaiyaraja was quick to incorporate it into the scheme of things.
Proof positive that music knows no boundaries.
Ilaiyaraja has composed the music in Budapest, Hungary. A taste
of the foreign blended with the inimitable taste of India a surefire
formula for success. The picturisation of Vande Mataram song carries
the movie to new heights both literally as well as figuratively.Siddharth
will be a trail blazer in the Indian world of Digital Film making.Singeetham
Srinivas Rao and Kamal Hassan the team that gave you Pushpak &
Appu Raja bring to you Mumbai Express.
“Kamal’s screenplay simply bubbles with zest”
says Singeetham. In his opinion, never in his entire career has
he ever seen a script that balances complexity so seamlessly with
the appeal to the common man, as this one does.
The stunt scenes directed by Vikram Dharma are bound to stir
awe among the audiences as Kamal races over Dharavi rooftops,
dangles from incredible heights & flirts with danger with
an insouciance that sets nerves on edge.
